Chapter 18

Stanley Darden was still searching for a job. Three months ago, he was a decorated sailor, and now he couldn’t even find a job flipping burgers. He missed being in the city of Norfolk. After being discharged from the Navy, Stan moved back home to a small suburb outside of Petersburg, Virginia.

The former sailor had been job hunting all week with no results. It was Friday night, and he needed to blow off some steam. He called some old high school friends, and they planned to meet at a local bar later that night. He even tried to contact his high school girlfriend, but she wanted nothing to do with him.

By the time his friends arrived at the bar, Stan was an entire bottle of tequila ahead of the group. Drunk and frustrated, Stan picked a fight with a bouncer and was kicked out of the bar. One of his friends offered to call him an Uber because he was too drunk to drive.

Stan was escorted to the car by the Uber driver, and in the morning, he woke up with a colossal hangover and no idea where he was. He attempted to stand up and was met with a baseball bat to his ribs.

Gasping for air, Stan sat back down. His head spun, and he waited until he could breathe again before asking, “Who are you? Why are you doing this?”

His captor stood over him wearing an oversized black hoodie and a black ski mask.

“Take the mask off, Chicken Shit, and show me your face!” yelled Stan.

He was hit again, but this time in the back of the head which rendered him unconscious. When he woke up again, his hands were bound together behind his back, and his feet were tied together. His vision was still a little blurry from the hit on the head, but he made out a figure approaching him. He gasped when the figure became clear, and he knew exactly who it was and why he was there.

Lexie and Alex were having a wonderful weekend at the beach. Lexie made every effort to tuck her feelings about the divorce away and focus on Alex. She kept her phone on silent the entire trip. Lexie didn’t want to talk to anyone except her daughter for the whole weekend.

After spending a peaceful two days with Alex, it was time for Lexie to face reality once again. She was determined to do two things when she returned to Norfolk. The first was to focus on the good things she had in her life and not the things she had lost. The second was to catch the Mermaid Murderer. Alex fell asleep an hour into their drive back, and Lexie took this time for one last cry.

It’s okay. I’m okay. I can do this. I must keep it together for Alex. This is what Dani needs to do to heal from the pain I caused her, and I have to let her do it even if it destroys me.
